I was just flying back to Shanghai from Chicago on United, after a busy week in California and Texas, when our plane was turn back. WE were flying over the north poll and when one of the gauges on the plane stop working. The pilot had to dump all the fuel as a safety measure and then turn around and fly back to Chicago.
I had to explain my son that dumping fuel is very normal in aviation when there is any type of emergency to reduce any risks of accidents, as he was quite concerned.
Perhaps small inconvenience but better to be safe. I can not imagine having an emergency landing on the North Poll...
Looking forward of getting home to get one day rest, as Monday I have to fly out to HKG!
